Periodontics / Gumtreatment

We are here to help when you need us.

1. Periodontal Disease:** The most common condition treated by periodontists is periodontal disease, often referred to as gum disease. This is a bacterial infection of the gum tissues and bone that support the teeth. There are two main stages of gum disease:
Gingivitis:** The earliest stage of gum disease, characterized by redness, swelling, bleeding, and inflammation of the gums.
Periodontitis:** Advanced gum disease that can lead to bone loss, gum recession, pocket formation around the teeth, and tooth mobility. It can result in tooth loss if not properly managed.

2. Scaling and Root Planing:** Periodontists often perform scaling and root planing procedures, also known as deep cleaning. This involves the removal of plaque and calculus (tartar) from below the gumline and the smoothing of the tooth roots to prevent bacterial buildup and promote gum reattachment.

3. Periodontal Surgery:** In cases of advanced periodontitis, surgical procedures may be necessary to repair and regenerate damaged gum and bone tissues. Procedures may include:
Flap Surgery:** The gums are lifted to allow for better access to the root surfaces. Infected tissue is removed, and the area is cleaned before repositioning the gums.
Bone Grafting:** Bone grafts may be used to restore lost bone support around the teeth.
Gum Grafting:** Gum grafts can be performed to treat gum recession, where the gums have pulled away from the teeth, exposing the roots.

4. Dental Implants:** Periodontists are often involved in the placement of dental implants. Implants are used to replace missing teeth and are surgically inserted into the jawbone. Healthy gums and adequate bone support are essential for the success of dental implant procedures.

5. Maintenance and Follow-Up Care:** Periodontists work with patients to develop long-term maintenance plans to manage gum health after treatment. Regular check-ups and cleanings are essential to prevent the recurrence of gum disease.

6. Oral Systemic Health:** Emerging research has shown a link between periodontal disease and various systemic health conditions, such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory illnesses. Periodontists are trained to consider these connections in patient care.

7. Cosmetic Periodontal Procedures:** Periodontists can also perform cosmetic gum procedures to improve the appearance of the gums, such as gum contouring or reshaping.

It's important for individuals with gum disease or concerns about their gum health to seek professional help from a periodontist. Early diagnosis and appropriate treatment can help prevent the progression of gum disease, preserve teeth, and promote overall oral health. Additionally, good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups, are essential in preventing gum disease and maintaining healthy gums.
